Market prospects of DC brushless motors for drones in the UAV field

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, are unmanned aircraft controlled by radio remote control equipment and self-contained program control devices. In recent years, the UAV industry has developed rapidly and is widely used in personal consumption, agricultural and forestry pest control, geographic surveying and mapping, environmental monitoring, power line patrol, film and television aerial photography, and other fields.

Currently, the UAV market is mainly composed of consumer-grade UAVs and commercial UAVs. Consumer-grade UAVs are mainly used in aerial photography and other entertainment scenarios. The applications of commercial UAVs are very extensive, covering various fields such as agricultural and forestry pest control, logistics, security, and patrol. The price of consumer-grade UAVs generally remains below $5,000, with a flight endurance of less than one hour. Compared with personal UAVs, commercial UAVs have a larger payload and longer flight time, and have achieved the most successful applications in industrial fields. Although the shipment volume of the commercial UAV market is small, the price is high, and its revenue accounts for two-thirds of the UAV market. According to Gartner's estimates, the global UAV market production reached 3.13 million units in 2018, with a market size of $7.3 billion, representing a year-on-year growth rate of 28%. The global UAV market shipment is expected to reach 3.7 million units in 2019.

In recent years, the consumption of robots (including UAVs) and related services in China has continued to grow rapidly, and is expected to reach $77 billion by 2022, with a compound annual growth rate of 26.3% from 2018 to 2022. Among them, China is the world's largest robot market, and is expected to account for more than 38% of the global total by 2022. In terms of the distribution of the Chinese robot (including UAV) market in 2022, manufacturing is expected to account for the highest proportion at 53%, followed by the resource industry at 11%, and the consumer goods industry at 7%. This is followed by healthcare and retail, with respective shares of 6% and 4%.

With the booming UAV market, the related industrial chain has also ushered in an opportunity for development. Undoubtedly, miniature Brushless DC Motor is one of the most important components of a UAV. Its performance directly affects the flight performance of the UAV. Therefore, the market for high-quality, high-performance, and long-life brushless UAV motors has tremendous development prospects.

The main components of a UAV include the flight control system and the remote controller. The key to determining whether a UAV is professional or consumer-grade lies in whether it has an intelligent flight control system and special functions. In principle, one motor needs an 8-bit MCU for control, but there are also solutions where one MCU controls multiple brushless DC motors. Professional UAVs are composed of different modules such as remote control, flight control, power system, and aerial photography. Depending on the requirements of different levels of products, different CPU cores will be used. On the flight control board, MCUs are currently used more often than CPUs for control and processing.

Increased acceleration and weight will put greater pressure on the entire motor system. When the motor control system detects a change in angle, it can control the motor to rotate in the opposite direction, thereby achieving stability. Professional UAVs use at least four to six brushless motors to drive the UAV's rotors, and the motor drive controller is used to control the UAV's speed and direction. The motor control system is crucial to the stability of the UAV, so the motor system of a professional UAV must be more precise and reliable.

The brushless DC motors used in UAVs have certain technical requirements in terms of structural design and motor control algorithms, and also require a rigorous performance testing and technical verification system to ensure product reliability. Therefore, Zhengde Zhikong continues to innovate, improve quality, and optimize processes, aiming to provide reliable UAV motor solutions for the UAV industry.
